Glen N. Barber, Ph.D. Chairman and Professor
The Department of Cell Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is dedicated to excellence and innovation in research and education of research scientists and physicians.
The research programs in the department focus on basic questions in Cell and Developmental Biology that are relevant to medically important problems. The faculty have a large number of collaborations with scientists from other departments as well as participation and leadership roles in research centers at the Medical School (i.e., the Sylvester Cancer Center, the Miami Project, the Diabetes Research Institute, and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.) The department is home for the administration of the graduate program in Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology, a interdepartmental program that includes faculty from many other basic science and clinical departments and confers Ph.D. degrees. Cell Biology faculty with funded research programs also play active roles in several different Ph.D. programs in the medical school, i.e. Cancer Biology, Neuroscience and others. These roles include graduate student mentoring and lecturing in graduate classes and course organization.
In addition, dedicated teaching faculty in the department work with the Office of Medical Education to coordinate several courses in the core curriculum of the medical school, offer electives for senior medical students and training for residents in clinical programs.
